Cenzo Design - Pittsburgh Custom Modern Furniture - Silverware Cabinet Chest DrawerWe couldn’t help but fall in love with our latest custom commission furniture piece…a walnut & curly maple silverware chest. Sourced from Western PA walnut and Eastern PA curly maple, the chest was made to house our client’s collection of family heirloom silverware. Oil rubbed brass knobs, antiqued furniture casters and locking drawer hardware were chosen to complement the richness of the lumber. We even added a secret interior compartment for documents or other valuables.  The details of the inlay began to grow as we laid out the designs and began working with the curly maple. We started with a few lines and it kept growing organically into the final layout. We’re hoping this piece gets handed down for generations to come. Truly one of favorite pieces to work on.

Beautiful wood and beautiful work. What did you finish it with if you don’t mind me asking. Being fairly new to woodworking, the effects of different finishes are still a mystery to me. I’ve got some nice pieces of curly maple I plan to use one day and after tons of looking and reading I stumbled here and it’s exactly how I envisioned the maple looking. Again, very nice.

Thanks! We use several coats of tung oil and then finish it with paste wax and a lot of buffing. It’s good to practice on scrap pieces of the wood you want to finish.

Yep, practicing and testing on scrap is how I’ve gone about what I’ve worked on so far. The maple is just too nice to get it wrong and I’ve seen lots of things that I thought were overdone with dyes and such. One day I’ll get there. Thanks for the reply!

Such a beautiful chest, individual furniture like this is so popular. People are looking for more personal and customised furniture to make their home a bit more individual.
